When to use "dont" vs "duquel" in French relative pronouns?

Hi everyone! I keep getting confused about when to use "dont" versus "duquel" when making relative clauses in French. I was reading a novel in French and came across this sentence: "C'est le livre dont je t'ai parlé." I know this means "It's the book I told you about," but I'm wondering why it's not "duquel" here?

I understand that both seem to mean "of which" or "about which," but I can't figure out the rule. Like, would it be wrong to say "C'est le livre duquel je t'ai parlé"?

From what I can tell, "dont" seems more common, but there must be specific cases where you have to use "duquel" instead? Any help would be appreciated - this has been bugging me for weeks! 😅
