Hey everyone!

I was watching this French movie yesterday (can't remember the name but it was about a breakup), and one of the characters said "J'ai le cafard" when their friend asked how they were doing. I know "cafard" means cockroach, but that obviously can't be the literal meaning here! 😅

From the context and the character's gloomy expression, I'm guessing it means something like feeling down or depressed? But I'm really confused about how a cockroach relates to feeling sad lol.

Has anyone heard this expression before? I tried looking it up but I'd love to know how common it is and if French people actually use it in everyday conversation. Also curious if there are any similar expressions!

Thanks in advance!
