If somebody wants to start reading in Italian, what books would you recommend? Are there any strategies on how to quickly improve reading original text?

Probably the best book to read in Italian is the one you already previously read because you are already familiar with what it talks about and you can focus more on the language. Non-fiction are also easier books to read compared to a novel so that can also be a way to go if you like the genre.
