Hallo. I don't understand the difference between in and im in German

Hallo! It is quite simple:
In is the standard version, im is the shortened version of "in dem".
This only happens when "in" is used for a position (which requires the dative) together with a masculin or neutral noun.
- Das Auto | In dem Auto = Im Auto
- Der Osten | In dem Osten = Im Supermarkt
- Die Schule | In der Schule = in der Schule <-- There is no shortened version for this one
