How did you learn a language?

How did you learn a language? Personal experiences/tips? I'm learning a language by myself & I'm pretty dedicated, but there are times that I want to bang my head against a wall. I have made a lot of progress this past 5 months, not as much as I want though. So I would want to hear from you.
