Today I came across two different French expressions for roller-coaster: les montagnes russes and le grand huit. Do they mean the same thing? What is the difference between them?

"Les montagnes russes" is the general one and "le grand 8" is one type of "montagnes russes". It is called this way because of its shape from the above, you basically just go in circles in a "grand 8", with ups and downs and everything else that is needed to put some adrenaline of course as well.
